Many Applications Service Provider ASP' s are wondering what Web hosting services are and how,
exactly, they will impact the ASP marketplace. Some ASP's view Web services as a threat, others a
like-minded business model. Web services are in their infancy and promise (like the fledgling ASPs of
the late 90's) an application utopia. Web services promote integration and, in theory, will unify various
systems on multiple platforms in seamless communication. Theory and actuality will depend greatly upon
the ability of Web services to improve operational performance in a cost-effective manner within a
reasonable timeline.
Most software product line is Web services, an interesting statement coming from a major player in the
mid-level ASP marketplace. Businesses are broken down into different departments and traditionally
software products were developed and delivered for each of those individual areas. What would happen
is a company would end up with a bunch of systems with islands of data that weren't talking to each other.
We take all of their applications that were traditionally sold separately and built those in a real time
integrated package. So if Application Service Provider (ASP) are offering integrated, customized
solutions the question remains: How do Web services impact or in any way change the way Application
Service Provider (ASP) are doing business?
According to business consultants with years of experience in the technology industry, Web services architectures are optimized for the Internet and, as a result, do not carry the same performance over
head that other technology architectures incur on the Internet. Web services architectures encourage specialization via platforms that are easily integrated with other providers. He claims that this results in, "service grids consisting of highly specialized enabling service providers focused in such areas as security, reliable messaging, and monitoring of service performance. The capabilities of these service grids will go
a long way in addressing customer concerns and building trust.
Still others raise a few questions about Web services and points out a hurdle or two Web services must overcome if they're to succeed. Some analysts argue that the implementation of Web services will create complex inter relationships and dependencies between applications, and make it more difficult to identify problems, assess their impact, and devise a solution. Other criticisms of Web services include the potential
to consume network bandwidth, questionable reliability, and poor message tracking. MVI contends that investment in Web services must be business-driven and business owned and the return on that investment rests, obviously, on the overall business value of Web services. Will operational performance improve over time relative to itself, the competition, or best practice? Will the improvement be due to the Web services functionality? Will it be at a cost commensurate with that improvement?
Whether or not Web services will be a success or failure they are indeed a force to be recognized.
Irrespective of Application Service Provider (ASP) fears, Web services can promote greater flexibility
for ASP end-users and refined cohesion. At worst, they'll complicate back end technology, muddle communication, and deepen customer trepidation however this is unlikely. Web services are fundamentally
a mechanism for an interface. Five years from now, 90% (of Web services) will be for machine to machine interaction. Completely automated and chained. The Application Service Provider (ASP) model doesn't
change and with the integration of Web services technologies an (ASP) can more tightly integrate with
a customer.
